The River Prairie Development in Altoona, situated along the peaceful Eau Claire River, aimed to revitalize the area into a vibrant community hub. Our firm, in collaboration with the City of Altoona, took on the task of creating a modern, lively downtown space that would bring people together. The project sought to redefine community living by incorporating contemporary trends while preserving the area's natural charm.

 

This transformation was crucial given the challenges of transitioning from a major highway to a pedestrian-oriented environment. The goal was clear: to harness the appeal of the Eau Claire River and create a place where residents and visitors could connect, explore, and enjoy. The "Power of 10" concept guided planning, ensuring the development offered a variety of engaging activities for all to enjoy.

We played a central role in orchestrating the development of River Prairie. While the project was co-led by civil engineering and landscape architecture, their expertise in landscape architecture and design was evident in every aspect of the project. With a focus on connectivity and community, we crafted pathways, gathering spaces, and serene riverbanks that invited people to linger and enjoy the surroundings.

 

The project unfolded in three distinct phases, each adding layers to the community experience. Phase 1, set the foundation with gateway signage and naturalized landscape finishes. Phase 2, completed in 2016, focused on the construction of streets, roundabouts, and Main Street's design. Finally, Phase 3, finished in 2017, brought to life the vision of Main Street, parking lots, and vibrant public spaces.

River Prairie represents a remarkable transformation from an undeveloped highway area to a thriving center of commerce and recreation. The development seamlessly blends spaces for recreation, markets, dining, and the arts. Its significance lies in its ability to create a bustling yet inviting atmosphere, where the community can come together to celebrate and connect.
