| HISTORIC AMERICAN LANDSCAPES SURVEY |
What is HALS?
“HALS, the Historic American Landscape Survey, was established in 2000 as a program of the National Park Service (NPS), in large part due to the efforts of the Historic Preservation Professional Practice Network (PPN). HALS is modeled on two successful historic preservation programs: the Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS) and the Historic American Engineering Record (HAER). Using guidelines established by ASLA and NPS, HALS documents important historic landscapes in the United States and its territories.” -Land Online (HALS).
Recently ASLA has embarked on improving the identification and collection of information concerning historic American landscapes. The Historic American Landscapes Survey (HALS) is our vehicle for assembling the necessary data to record significant landscape. These landscape surveys will be archived in the Library of Congress along with American Historic Landmarks.
HALS in Wisconsin
Each Chapter has identified a HALS coordinator to assemble appropriate surveys and forward them to the HALS Director. Our Chapter HALS Coordinator is Prof. Arnold (Arne) Alanen.
Please take a moment and review Arne’s request below for volunteers in Wisconsin’s HALS initiative. Wisconsin has been at the forefront in recording and preserving our State’s history. As Landscape Architects let’s continue that great tradition and lead the effort in the HALS initiative.
